How does the Dr. Polo’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program work?
The program utilizes a hormone that promotes the mobilization of fat stores in certain target areas of the body when combined with a low calorie diet. It is approved for use in stimulating ovulation in women experiencing problems becoming pregnant, or who are experiencing problems associated with the reproductive organs. It is not currently approved for weight loss, though it has been used for this purpose since the 1950s. Because the hormone immobilizes existing fat stores, patients report they do not feel hungry and the weight loss is rapid, but restricted to fat only (so you don’t lose muscle).
Is this hormone safe?
This hormone is one that is naturally produced by the male and female body. It has been approved in much higher dosages for the treatment of other conditions. It has proven to be entirely safe for consumption.
Can men consume this hormone?
Yes, men can, as they produce this hormone naturally and it enhances testosterone production.
Won’t I lose weight on just a 500 calorie diet without the hormone?
You will lose weight on a calorie reduced diet because you are burning more calories than you are consuming. However, you will be burning muscle along with fat; you want in fact to build muscle, not lose it. You will also experience extreme hunger and fatigue on such a calorie reduced diet. It is not recommended.
Will I be hungry only eating 500 calories?
The majority of our patients report they do not feel hungry! The hormone is mobilizing existing fat stores for energy so that your appetite for more energy will be suppressed.
Will I gain all the weight back once I stop the program?
If you return to your old ways, or those habits that created the weight gain in the first place, yes you will gain the weight back again. You need to change your lifestyle during the maintenance phase, and take advantage of the information and support provided by Dr. Polo. It is also recommended that you speak to Dr. Polo about any underlying health problems that may have contributed to your weight gain, such as hormone imbalances or thyroid disturbance.
How long is the program?
There are two options: you can choose to follow the 23 day program or the 40 day program. They only differ in their duration. Which program you choose depends on how much weight you want or need to lose. If you haven’t reached your goal weight at the end of your program you can do consecutive rounds after a 6 week break.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Women typically lose half a pound a day. Men typically lose a pound a day. It is very important that you follow the program exactly to see results. Results vary depending on how you adhere to the program and may vary depending on whether you have any underlying health problems.
What happens after the program is finished? Is there a maintenance phase?
There is a slow transition once the program is complete. You will enter a maintenance phase which lasts for 3 weeks in which you consume more calories, stop taking the hormone but enjoy a diet void of carbs and sugar. After those three weeks of maintenance you can slowly transition back into good healthy grains and carbs in moderation.
How do the initial appointment and follow up visits work? What can I expect at each visit?
Your initial visit is 45 minutes in length at which time your health is assessed, the program is explained to you in detail, you pick up your prescription, beginning measurements are taken and you pay for the program. Follow-up appointments last 15 minutes and include a B12 shot, body composition and weigh-in as well as review of your health journal to be sure you are on track. Dr. Polo can also answer any questions that you have.
What is the cost of the program?
You are invited to an initial consultation to assess whether this program is right for you, or if other weight loss guidance and treatment is more suited. Program fees are covered by most extended health plans under “Naturopathic Care.” Some extended health plans cover the cost of the hormone under “Prescriptions.”
What is the cost of the hormones and where do I get them? How are they administered?
We have an on-site pharmacy that administers the hormones to our patients. You can find out what the cost of the hormone is by calling Longevity Pharmacy at 604-544-7760.
Am I a candidate for this program?
In your initial visit, Dr. Polo will review your current and past health information. She will determine from speaking with you if this program is right for you.
What If I don't reach my goal weight after 1 round? Can I do other rounds?
Yes, consecutive rounds are okay. You must wait 6 weeks between rounds.
Can I exercise?
You will not be able to exercise during the Dr. Polo’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program, as your energy is reserved for burning fat stores. Light walking for 20 minutes is advised or gentle yoga, but nothing strenuous or intense is permitted.
How will my energy levels be? Will I be dizzy or lightheaded?
Weekly appointments monitor your progress, including if you are experiencing any side effects. It is normal to experience some light headedness initially if your body is detoxing from sugar and carbs. Your B12 shot will keep energy levels up but a weekly check-in will determine if more vitamins are required or any other changes should be made.
Do you offer any extra support at Polo Health for people doing the program?
We offer many services that are a perfect compliment to Dr. Polo’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program: IV therapy (Intravenous Vitamins and Minerals), counsellors for emotional eating, supplements and vitamins,.
Is there any online support from home?
We have a closed and private Facebook group for current and past Dr. Polo’s Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program participants. Many of our patients find this an integral piece of accountability and support. Often the group is the best place to go for answers and encouragement! We are also on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram for added online motivation.
